Authors are People Too
I have been thinking a lot lately about being an author and how tied up we are in our author lives and persona. I'm currently on a three month book tour of the USA, and I am loving every minute of it. I'm meeting new people, both readers and writers and having a blast. The picture above was taken at an author event at a lovely independent bookshop called The Printed Word. The owners of the shop have a real passion for promoting reading within the community, especially children and young people. I applaud them for what they do and it was an honour to spend time with them. The gentleman in the middle is the owner along with his wife who is taking the picture.
However, it is tiring and every minute of every day seems to be taken up with something to do with writing or books. I am also at the stage in life where every day seems to bring news of the serious illness or death of a friend, many of whom I have known for years. This really made me take stock. How much time do I take to spend with people, just as friends? How often do I tell people I care for them and enjoy spending time with them?
So, my post today is deliberately short to give you time to remember you are more than a writer as the name of this blog suggests. Take time out to spend time with people and let them know you care. Tell them you care about and love them as you never know when you will have the chance again.
I will finish by saying I care about every single person reading this blog and want you to know someone is thinking about you. Enjoy a day off because remember, you are not just an author but a person first. You are you. Celebrate that and take time for you.
Lovely post, Wendy. (Allison Symes)
ReplyDeleteThank you. Glad it resonated with you
DeleteThank you, Wendy. Great words.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I am glad they resonated.
DeleteYes this is so true, Wendy. Thank you for reminding us of what is really important in our lives, and which we can tend to disregard if we are so caught up in the business of writing, publishing & promoting. (Sheila).
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sheila. Wendy
DeleteThank you Wendy, you are such a blessing. We all must be reminded of our humanity and that even God rested.
ReplyDeletePrecisely that. We all need rest and we all need to know someone cares. Wendy
DeleteLovely post, Wendy! Thank you. You mentioned a stark reality - Some of us are in that stage of life where peeole we have known for so many years are called to higher glory ! This is the time to show care and love, as we might regret missing the opportunity. Thanks for the reminder, advice and encouragement. Blessings.
ReplyDeleteSo true. Thank you Wendy. And a good excuse to break out a Mars Bar if only to read the wrapper Work Rest and Play.
ReplyDeleteThat really resonated. Thank you
ReplyDeleteVery apt post, Wendy. Busy-ness, writing and other, so often gets in the way of nurturing and appreciating our relationships and friendships.
ReplyDeleteGreat reminder; thank you. I also lost a friend recently and have been reflecting on the joy of being alive myself and 3.5 years cancer-free. I need to celebrate more!
