Am I A Dinosaur?
I ask this question because since becoming a Christian in 1977 I’ve always enjoyed doing bible studies, whether on my own or in groups. Maybe that’s why one of my early writing projects was writing bible studies. How else do we choose what to write unless it’s what we enjoy reading ourselves?
Well anyway at the recent ACW Writing Day, I took some of my self-published bible studies to York with me. I wasn’t expecting to sell all my wares but to not even sell one was disappointing. I did, however, enjoy the day with speaker Shaun Lambert. He presented very challenging sessions.
Well back to the
challenge of that day. Was it my writing that was so dreadful or are Christians
just not interested in bible study these days? I wondered about the genre. I
have noticed that short devotional books are more enticing for those with
little time. You know what I mean, where perhaps the book is thematic and each
commentary on an isolated text gives a feel-good factor. Certainly, these too
have a place. What about the in-depth study of a book of the bible, where you
set aside an hour to reflect on the bible?
I heard a whisper the
other day that traditional publishers are no longer accepting the type of
devotional material that they used to. I’m not sure what that is about but it
came from a trad-published author.
So, the finger points
back to myself. Is my writing so dreadful? I’m not looking for commiserations
here just doing some evaluation. When I started writing it was for my own
pleasure and getting some of my thoughts down on the page. Now I seem to be
thinking of my audience. Is that a bad thing?
Maybe it’s time to go
back to my other genre, historical fiction. I’ve got the beginning of another
manuscript which had some interesting feedback from a Writing East Midlands literary critic, which needs to be taken out of that ‘to be finished later’
drawer. Or maybe I’ll start the memoir I’ve been promising myself to write.
After all, being a dinosaur might help there.
I am retired from just about everything; ex minister, ex teacher, ex secretary, ex pub cleaner. I can be found once a month reflecting on the bible on YouTube (search Reverend Rosalie Weller) and on my website www.rosalieweller.com.
An interesting post Rosalie. Knowing your audience is certainly important. One of my most popular books is my biography, The Golden Thread and I am just about to release the sequel called, 'I'm Still Valued.' Memoir is always popular as it is real. Why not write yours, I am sure it will be interesting. You are certainly no dinosaur and God still wants to use you.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your encouragement Brendan. I've got an outline for the memoir so maybe I'll get started on it.
DeleteActually, it has to be said, the disappointment is real and needd acknowledging by all of us - some types of books are more liekly to sell than others ata 'Christian writers' event. Some things are more popular: at present I suspect that 'devotionals' which give the reader a short passage to meditate on day by day will go because it fives them a subject for the 'quiet time' over a whole month... My books aren't popular possibly because they are fiction, (traditionally sidelined by many Christian groups) and deal with the hurly-burly of family life in today's world - fiction based around Medieval life, more in tune with a Christian world view are possibly more relaxing? Ones which mainly feature believers will also go better than mine, as I try to write for the mainstream, from a Çhristian viewpoint but not putting that over overtly as a solution to the confusions of life. Thirdaly, sadly I suspect people look for an easier read than some of your titles suggest, life being so utterly exhausting at present!
ReplyDeleteYes Clare I think I was having a bad day but switching to another genre might do me good.
DeleteApologies for typos in my comment above!
ReplyDeleteLovely post, Rosalie, thanks. Welcome to the club of multi genre writing. All the best with historical fiction and then other types of fiction. Also don't be too hard on your self. Sometimes it feels like we are all dinosaurs. You are not alone! Thank God It's Him who gave us the 'fire' let Him also provide the 'sacrifice'! Blessings
ReplyDeletethank you Sophia, hope the Black Novelists event goes well tomorrow
DeleteDon't even think for one second that your writing is possibly dreadful! It isn't. There may be all sorts of reasons why people didn't buy your books. Hard up. Have already got several bible studies waiting to be read. Have a fave one that is read all the time, over and over again. Have three at home awaiting an opening! Etc.. Your writing is not in question by anyone, and you are not allowed to criticise your own writing ever again!
