Be Ruthless with Hurry

 February deadline, papers to read, planning to finish, forms to complete, children to parent… the list goes on. In fact, there isn’t enough time to make a list.

I am so busy being busy and hurrying and scurrying that I am beginning to lose me. Yesterday, a friend recommended a book.

Another book? Yes, I love reading books, books have been my friends but actually, right now I have no time to read them. She thrust it under my nose and without even looking at the front cover I flicked it open to a random page.

“If the devil can’t make you sin, he’ll make you busy” - Corrie ten Boom

I flicked again;

“Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life” – Dallas Willard

I took a deep breath and turned my eyes heavenwards, “OK, Lord, I’m listening but you do know I have an important book deadline, I can’t just walk away from my family, my job, my commitments.”

Again, I flicked through the book.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden light.” – Jesus Christ (Matt 11:28)

That says it all, really.

PS. I’ve started reading the book – The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry (How to stay emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world) by John Mark Comer. It’s good.

  1. So many things to be busy about but thank God that confusion and uncertainty are not your worries. God will prioritise for you. Thanks for the scriptures. Really blessed me!

  2. I know I'm in danger of being overwhelmed when the thought of writing a list is more than I can cope with. Thanks for the reminder to slow down and focus on what's really important. PS I second your endorsement of this book - I found it so helpful.
