Just a glimpse by Tracy Williamson

It's important to take note of the glimpses of life that so easily pass us by.  To see something that we may not otherwise have seen; to choose to stop, to pause life's track; to dare to look and wonder.

My friend Kim was shopping.  On her way back to her car she glanced through a hole in the car park hedge. Normally she would have just seen a view of the river; but at that particular moment, she saw a boat lined up exactly in the centre of her peep-hole.

Perfectly framed.

A divine pause

Just a glimpse

A cause for conjecture

Where was the boat heading?  Who was on board?  Were they happy, on an adventure?  Or were they sad or even trying to escape?

She had a perfect glimpse which led to wonder and out of that wonder a photo which I too gazed at and in my turn wondered and created a story

Life offers us such glimpses all the time. Glimpses that will, if we let them, reach deep within and empower us. not just to be imaginative in our writing, but to live with excitement and depth.

Do we stop and notice those glimpses?  Do we dare to wonder beyond what we can see?  The old woman peering through her window?  The barely adult girl sitting alone, staring out to sea?  One abandoned shoe in a field? A wedding dress with its 'As new; Unworn' label?  The dustman pulling the wheelie bin so so slowly?

Just a glimpse?

Someone's life; Someone's story; Our wonder; Our story.

The disciples walked and learned to notice; stopped for a glimpse and took mental snapshots.  Through them, we see Jesus reaching out to touch the leper whom everyone else ran from.  Jesus weeping before raising his dead friend; Jesus asleep on a cushion; breaking bread as they ate together; delighting in the tiny flowers and birds; chatting with a woman at a well. . .

Glimpses into a person

Glimpses into a story. Glimpses into wonder and understanding

Glimpses into God

  1. How beautiful, Tracy. You've given me so many ideas for stories there and yes, you're right, if we stop and look we see so much more every day. The wedding dress is appealing to me - that would make a wonderful story.
