How do we Use Words by Wendy H. Jones
Readers of this and my own Bookaholic blog will know that I like adult colouring books. Almost as much as I like writing in fact. I have recently bought a daily devotional which is also a colouring book. Perfect. Even more perfect was starting off the study with this image and the words that go with it. Words are my, and I am sure for many reading this, joy and inspiration. I am never happier than when reading or writing. Well maybe chocolate might be up there too. As an author, I use words to express myself, to paint pictures, and to weave a story. In my non-fiction books I use words to support others, to lead someone in a certain direction, to illuminate and advise.
However, as a writer who is also a Christian, do I ever pause to think about what words God would want me to write? Do you? This verse from Proverbs 16:24 tells us that our words can be used to heal and to soothe. Words have power, greater power than we can ever imagine. Whether we write fiction or non-fiction our readers believe in us and the words we use are not only read but internalised. Our words have power as we are perceived as being experts.
This passage made me think about what I do and my responsibilities as an author. Am I using my writing to bring Glory to God. Before anyone thinks I am suggesting we should only write Christian books, that is not the case. I write fiction which is suitable for both Christians and non-Christians alike. I believe this is the path that God would have me take and I will do this to the best of my ability. However, most people know I am a Christian and I believe that my books should reflect different values. I do my writing not just for the readers but for God.
I leave you with a question, how are you using your words? I will be praying for each and every writer reading this blog as you carry out the work God has called you to do. It is a privilege and an honour to be a part of such a group who use their words wisely.
