The Vagaries of Time by Wendy H. Jones

"I seriously don't know where time goes, it really does slip through my fingers."

How many of you reading this blog has said this to themselves over the years. Time is an amazing commodity. We have the same amount of it every day, every week, every month and every year, yet, we never seem to have enough of it. As children time seems to stretch interminably, with every milestone taking what feels like several years to arrive. Then, we grow up and move into the world of work. Holiday's flash by in a blur of activities and time slows down again when we return to work. I know my working life was like that, despite the fact I enjoyed every job I did. Then, I became a writer and have never had enough time in my day since. The days just disappear in a flurry of writing, editing, marketing, promoting, research, book signings, publishing, providing everything my agent needs, in fact every minute of every day is taken up with something book related. Even when reading I seem to read with a writer's eye. And don't talk to me about the days - they flash past even more quickly than the hours and minutes. Take this blog as an example; the 1st of every month seems to hurtle towards me like a bullet train on speed. How on earth did this happen. Seriously, it's scary. Yet, appear it does and a blog post must be written. Have I got any sage advice for you on how to manage time more effectively? Absolutely. Screeds of it. Am I going to give you it? Nope, not this month, as we all know what we need to do to manage our diaries. IT seems to be doing it that is the problem. Let me know in the comments if that describes you. It certainly describes me.

Talking about the advance of time, dare I mention Christmas? As this is a literary blog, then absolutely. Books for the Christmas reading market are ordered by stores in June. Yes, you got that right, June. Christmas Devotionals have already been written. Writers around the world were writing about turkey, tinsel and the birth of Christ, while sipping margaritas on a Caribbean island. I recently found myself sitting in a Scottish heatwave writing a story set in the North Pole at Christmas. I can tell you it really does challenge your inner fiction writer to conjure up the North Pole when you are swigging iced water like it's the nectar of life. As we are talking of Christmas, many of us will be looking for Christmas presents earlier to spread the cost prior to the energy price hikes. So, if you have a book that features Christmas, a Christmas Devotional or a book that would make a great Christmas present, please post a description and a link in the comments and we can all get some fabulous ideas. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can buy. Let me start with the Christmas Anthology I am in - Deadly Traditions.

  1. Time does slip through m fingers! I can't believe the summer hols are over and I'm back to school still wondering where it all went! I also can't believe we are already thinking of Christmas already! Just last year, I promised myself to write a poem on Christmas but time again slipped by. Hope I achieve that this christmas. Lovely post. Thanks and blessings.

  2. I was just commenting about how this year has flown by! The anthology looks like fun and I can't wait to read it. :-)
I have a Christmas book available for pre-order. It's the fifth book in my young adult paranormal cozy mystery series. However, the mystery is resolved in every book.

  3. Thanks Wendy. I'm forever battling the clock! Just pre-ordered your anthology; I do love a good Christmas read. The final story in my book 'The Magnificent Moustache and other stories' is set in North West Wales in the freezing December winter of 1740. A Christmas scarf is significant , so I think I can scrape in under the Christmas category. Besides, it will make a great present for family and friends. £9.99 from the usual outlets. Merry Christmas shopping, to one and all!

    1. I know this book would make a fantastic present. If course anything with snow is classed as Christmas and thank you for buying the anthology.

  5. Great blog! But now I'm thinking about Christmas! Isabella does celebrate the season three times at the Old Rectory, each time with a lovingly described menu and various family issues. Mostly written for laughs but with heart at the core. And snow does make an appearance too! Is that good enough?

    1. I think it more than counts. Nice one, although 3 does seem a trifle self indulgent 😂
