I saw the kingdom of heaven today.

A child told a man in a suit

about her day,

in all its 3-year-old detail,

and he stopped what he was doing,

crouched down beside her

and listened.

I saw the kingdom of heaven today.

A teenager with neon hair

offered his seat on the bus to a lady

five times his age,

unplugged his earphones,

and listened to her stories from long ago.

I saw the kingdom of heaven when she

in turn

asked for his stories

and his mask of cool crumpled

and he told her he'd failed his exams

and she gave him a hug.

I saw the kingdom of heaven today.

On a train

when a woman smiled at a woman

who was holding back tears

as commuters glared at her

as she wished she could stop her

baby's cry

and, from that smile, she

received strength to smile back

and mean it.
