Our desire to write

I often think about how long it takes some writers to get their inspiration and how, suddenly, they get the lightbulb moment to write about it and complete their works. At school, we were given a topic or a photograph to look at and asked to write about it, what it meant to us. It always seemed so easy to do then, as I loved English and writing, and had a young, creative mind.

Today there is so much going on in our world around us, you would think it would be easy to get the inspiration to write.  Yet when it comes to it, I find it quite hard to think up something off the cuff, rather than be asked to write about a particular object or situation, which I have always found it easier, as the idea has already been presented to you.

When I woke up the other morning at around 5.30, the sun was shining through the gaps in the Venetian blinds, so I got up to look at it, as it was my desire to go and see the beauty God had created for us to enjoy, and also something that may get me up early and inspire me to do some of the long awaited jobs around the house.

When I went to the window and opened the blinds, I noticed the very bright orange colour of the sun, as the photograph that I took shows above.  The sun was shining so brightly and was so strong, it was very hard to look anywhere near it, and all sorts of things went through my mind, about the sunshine, just how different it looked and how hard it was to actually look at it once I had opened the curtains, and what is going on with the sunshine these days as it always seems too bright to look at.

I ended up photographing it quickly, without having to look straight at it, which would have been very hard to do anyway.

When I looked at the photograph afterwards, it amazed me, and I asked myself, what did I see in the photograph, what did it mean to me and how would I describe it  if I wrote about it.

Writing can be quite challenging sometimes, but then, the photograph of the sunshine was important enough for me to write about and share on my blog.

What do you see in the sunshine.

God bless.

  1. Very beautiful post, Derrice. Thank you. I see we both have a lot in common. I have also taken a peek at the window several times to catch nature at different levels, and I was always inspired to write poetry or incorporate aspects of the moon and the sun into my weather writing for prose. And as for house chores, tell me about it! My second name,'Anyanwu', means 'sunshine'. Therefore, I see the sunshine not just as an inspiration but also as a part of my personality. I also see it as a way God radiates through me to heal me completely. I also wondered what else went through your mind, that you didn't share here! Enjoyed the post. God bless you, too. Blessings.

  2. Gosh yes; I remember how easy it seemed at school. I would have loved the timetable to have featured creative writing in all the daily slots! #notamathematician

  3. I loved story writing at school as well, and I have lost count of the amount of sunset pictures I have... I agree, it's so much easier when a topic is set, and it's something we enjoy as a local Christian writers' group!

  4. OK...seat belt on. Loved the photo. Here's what I saw: the yellow almost circle/sphere was child-like. Always a yellow circle, usually at the top of the page. Yours retains the child in you...but look closer and there's more light and shade; a life lived. And the gorgeous, unsymmetrical red/orange glow is how your life has shone out, unevenly, successes and setbacks, no doubt including your writing, but always shining...into the world around. It's autobiographical. Keep writing!

    1. Wow John this is amazing, thank you so much you are such a blessing, and you are spot on. You truly are blessed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Maybe a book on prophecy is brewing inside you. (1 Corinthians 14: 1-6). God bless.
