God is Always Working!
Do you ever wonder if your words have any impact, or question if anyone is even reading? Especially when you share your writing online, it can be difficult to know the impact it’s having. However, as Christian writers, that’s where faith comes in. We release our words and allow God to use them as he chooses – and sometimes he does in the most unexpected ways.
I thought I’d share an encouraging true story this month. While not directly related to writing, I hope you are heartened in your writing journey by this example of God at work:
A young man was working as a door-to-door salesman, and he went to the house of an elderly lady. In the course of the conversation, the lady shared the Gospel with him. (Sidenote: what an amazing way to deal with door-to-door salespeople – if they’re interested it’s a wonderful opportunity and if not, I’m guessing they’ll leave pretty quickly!)
In this case, the lady could see that he was interested, and on discovering he lived in a nearby city, she recommended a church to him and encouraged him to go along.
Although he had never been to church in his life, the young man went along to the church, and after the service he spoke to the minister.
On hearing his story, the minister asked, “What made you decide to come to church on the recommendation of a lady you’d never met before?”
His answer: “Because two ladies came into my primary school and told me about Jesus.”
As it happens, I was one of those ladies, and the reason I got to hear this story is because the other lady is a member of the church he went along to!
Speaking to children in school can be a bit like writing in the sense that often when your words go out, you have no idea of the impact they have. It’s encouraging to discover that my words played a part in a young man being open to the Gospel and going along to a church ten years later!
I also recognise that I am privileged to have heard this story because of the circumstances. I am convinced that there are many more stories we will only discover in heaven, and that as the song “Way Maker” reminds us, God is always working even when we can’t see it, even when we can’t feel it.
“So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.” (1 Corinthians 15:58 NLT)
