New Song - by Meryl McKean
I awoke early this morning, it still felt like night. The
early dawn rays were just beginning to penetrate the curtains, I lay there for
a while hoping sleep would return. I didn’t want to look at the time and be
brought into the reality of just how early I had woken. As I lay there in the
stillness, I heard the first bird offer it’s clear sweet song to the world as
the dawn chorus began. Like the sound of a solo instrument at the beginning of
an orchestral piece, this bird burst forth in the silence. It was as if it was
announcing the new day. Even if I would rather not be conscious at this point,
here was a new day, a day to be filled with life, as yet uncharted and full of
possibilities, a new song for a new day.
The bible speaks of new songs in a number of places – Psalm
144 v 9 says – ‘I will sing you a new song.’ The psalmist speaking of his
intent of singing a fresh expression of worship to God.
There is something very hopeful about the dawn of a new day, something new and
as yet unspoilt, like clean sheets when you change the beds, with their wonderful smell of fresh linen and the promise of comfort and luxury that they bring. Or think about about a clean
sheet of paper. As writers there can be a thrill in seeing that clean unmarked
page, whether it be a physical page or a digital one, it is ready and waiting to
be written on. Full of potential for words to come together and sing. Words
offered to the world like a new song. With the power to add blessing or maybe
challenge to someone else’s day. To have an effect on the world around us.
Maybe that you think of yesterday with a sense of regret for all the things written or unwritten. Our pages of yesterday are never wasted; God uses them all to inform and affect the fresh pages of each day.
So even if you like me are starting the day earlier than desired or maybe you are struggling to start it at all. Remember each day is a gift, a day of possibilities. What will today’s page hold? Enjoy that clean sheet today.

What a lovely encouragement! Will ponder it for a while, as some days feel like they have too many hours to get through....
