The Best Laid Plans by Wendy H. Jones

As individuals, and as writers, I am sure we all make plans about how our day, week, month, year or life will pan out. We set off each day with the best of intentions knowing what we will be doing. However, as my fellow Scot Rabbie Burns says, 'The best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft a-gley'. For the non Scots amongst us this means that no matter what plans we put in place things will often go wrong.

How often have we woken up in the morning knowing how our day is going to pan out. We are going to spend the whole day writing. Then, before we've even had our plate of weeetabix, (other cereals and gluten free alternatives are available) life comes along and disrupts our day. The cat is sick on the kitchen floor, whilst cleaning this up the tap breaks and floods the kitchen. In the middle of phoning a plumber, the kids turn up, sent home from school because the heating has broken down. You get the picture. I live alone with no pets and yet somehow many of my days are chaos. Before I know it another day has gone and I haven't done any writing.

However, as Christians, we know that God has a plan for our lives. We can depend on his plans.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "Plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jer 29:11

Regardless of how wrong things appear to be going on in our lives we can be sure that God is right there with us, and he has a perfect plan in mind

  1. This is so true Wendy and a great reminder that God is in control. While these kinds of things have happened to me a lot, I've also seen Him stretch time on a number of occasions to give me the time I need to complete a writing project. Great post. Thank you.

  3. On the other hand, I think Jesus said something like 'In this world, I can promise you'll have trouble.' So, we shouldn't be surprised at all that things gang aft agley. In my opinion, things gang aft all the time, and it's just unganging them that's the problem.
